History

Link was born and raised in the village of Ordon in the southernmost province of the kingdom of Hyrule. Throughout his young adult life, he has worked for his neighbor Fado, herding goats at the town’s ranch. He has one friend his age, Ilia, who is often more worried about his horse than him. But the two share a close bond formed over their lifetime of knowing one another. The many children of the town look up to Link, and are always exciting to see what new sword tricks he’s learned in his training with Rusl. The life Link was used to was simple and quiet. Not many traveled outside the boundaries of the forest and into Hyrule, because one would have to pass through more dangerous sections of the forest.

Strange things began happening around the village, though. On the day that Link was supposed to deliver a sword and shield as a gift to the Royal Family, the children and Ilia are kidnapped by strange monsters never before seen in Ordon. Link is knocked out during the kidnapping, and by time he wakes up, his friends are gone. He rushes north, toward the Faron Province, but comes across a bizarre, black curtain known as Twilight. Upon entering the curtain, Link is transformed into a wolf and taken by more monsters into the dungeons of Hyrule Castle, where he meets Midna, an impish creature with similar appearance to the monsters living inside the Twilight. She helps him out of the dungeons, guiding Link to the topmost tower of the castle where Zelda, Hyrule’s rightful Queen, is held captive. She explains how Zant has seized control of Hyrule, covering much of it in the supernatural curtain of Twilight in order to merge the land of Hylians with his own domain.

Upon returning to Ordon, Link, still a wolf, collects the sword and shield meant to be delivered to the castle, and speaks with Ordona, the guardian Light Spirit of the Ordon Province where Link lives. She explains that Zant has taken her power as a Light Spirit and scattered it in Tears across the Province. Link collects those tears, banishing the cover of Twilight and setting his homeland back to normal. But the rest of Hyrule is still covered. Midna explains that in order to defeat Zant, they must collect Fused Shadows, objects harnessing incredible power that are scattered throughout the kingdom.

Link restores the Spirit Faron, lifting the curse on her respective land. She gives him his signature outfit- the green tunic, boots, gloves, and mail once worn by the Hero of Time himself. She claims that Link is chosen by the Goddesses to be the next hero of Hyrule, a great honor and a great burden. After recovering a Fused Shadow in the Forest Temple, Link sets off for the Eldin Province to rid it of the Twilight. He finds the kidnapped children, safely hidden away with Renado, the shaman of Kakariko village. However, because they are part of the Twilight Realm, they cannot see Link, who is protected in his wolf form by the goddesses. Restoring the Eldin Province back to its original state, Link is reunited with the children. (When he has restored an area, he is returned to his human form. When he re-enters the Twilight, he is stuck as a wolf until he has freed that respective region.) Ilia is nowhere to be found, though. Link is reunited with his horse, who proved to be too much for the monsters to handle as she came charging through the village with two of them failing to keep her under control.

Renado now tells Link that the economy of the town is suffering because the Gorons, a normally friendly race living on the mountain next to Kakariko, have cut off ties with the humans and aren’t even letting them near Death Mountain. (Death Mountain supplies the town’s bomb making industry.) Link is sent to investigate, but is easily overpowered by the brute strength of the Goron people. So Link returns to Ordon, where he speaks to its mayor, Bo, who is also Ilia’s father. Bo is the only man alive who has ever gone toe to toe with a Goron and won. The mayor teaches Link how to sumo wrestle, then gives him his secret weapon- Iron boots that are so heavy even an enormous Goron won’t be able to move him. When Link is able to defeat the Gorons, he earns their respect and is allowed to enter the Goron Mines. He also discovers that the Gorons were only keeping humans away because their Patriarch has become cursed and is very dangerous. Link enters the Mines where the Patriarch is being held. He defeats the monster possessing him and discovers that this was all caused by the dangerous Fused Shadow. Collecting the item, Link makes his way for the final curtain of Twilight in the Lanayru Province.

Link tracks down Ilia, who is hiding out in Castle Town. Now certain of his friend’s safety, he makes his way to Lake Hylia after overhearing that something has happened there. Upon his arrival, the lake is almost completely drained. He makes his way up the rivers to find that the source in Zora’s Domain is completely frozen over. With the help of Midna, who has remained his sardonic yet helpful companion throughout his travels, Link melts the ice and restores both the Zora’s home, and Lake Hylia, to their original states. Now he can access all of the Spirit Lanayru’s light and restore the last part of Hyrule. The revived spirit tells Link about the origin of the Twili people. The Light Spirits were instructed by the goddesses to construct The Mirror of Twilight, which was used to seal away the wicked inside the Twilight Realm. The Twili people are the descendents of these criminals, and Zant seeks to control both worlds. The spirit of Rutela, the Zora’s queen, now appears to Link, telling him that her son is in danger. (Link actually saw the boy in Castle Town while Twilight still covered Lanayru Province.) She promises to give him something that will let him access the Lakebed Temple at the bottom of Lake Hylia in exchange for saving her son. Link brings the boy to Kakariko, where Renado cares for him. He also brings Ilia to the town to be with the children, but discovers that she has lost her memory. Rutela gives the crestfallen Link Zora Armor for his deeds. With it, he can breathe under water and retrieve the last Fused Shadow.

But when Link exits the Temple, a very amused Zant appears, mocking Link and Midna’s efforts as well as the withered power of the Fused Shadows. Easily overpowering them both, Zant curses Link to remain a wolf, and takes control of Lanayru, exposing Midna to the Spirit’s divine light. Because Midna is an inhabitant of Twilight, she is mortally wounded. After Zant has left, Midna weakly begs Link to bring her to Zelda. Heeding her request, Link carries the Twili back to the castle, breaking in through a secret passage. Zelda is sympathetic towards the two, telling Link that his curse can only be lifted by the power of the Master Sword, a legendary blade lying in the sacred realm that banishes evil with its touch. It can only be wielded by the chosen hero. Zelda then heals Midna, passing her life force onto her, and with it, the divine power of the Triforce within Zelda. She vanishes, leaving Midna able to exist fully (She was only a shadow before.) in the land of light as well as the Twilight Realm. Midna tried to stop her, but she was already gone. After this incident, Midna is much kinder to Link in her speech patterns and actions. The two become more like friends than simply allies. The two solemnly depart the tower.

Link travels to the Sacred Grove, passing its puzzles and attaining the Master Sword, which accepts him as its wielder and returns him to his human form. The banished curse takes on the form of a small stone, which Midna keeps. Now Link can become a wolf whenever he deems it necessary. In search of the fabled Mirror of Twilight, the two make their way into the Gerudo Desert and into the depths of its prison- The Arbiter’s Grounds, thanks to a tip from a member of the resistance movement against Zant. They discover that the Mirror has been split, and three large shards of it are missing. The Sages appear to them, telling them the story of Ganondorf, the evil King of the Gerudo people, who had been brought to the Grounds to be sentenced for his crimes. However, Ganondorf had already been inside the Sacred Realm, retrieving the Triforce of Power for himself. With its power, he was able to kill the Sage carrying out his execution. Thinking quickly, the remaining five Sages activated the Mirror of Twilight, banishing the King of Evil into the Twilight Realm. They explain that Zant is responsible for the Mirror’s damage. But because he is not the true ruler of the Twili, he was unable to destroy it completely. The three shards are scattered throughout Hyrule. The sages are able to give Link the general locations of the Shards as he sets off on another search mission.

First going to Snowpeak, he meets a snow beast couple, Yeto and Yeta. Yeto actually came across the Shard when traveling throw the arctic terrain and brought it back to his house without realizing how dangerous it was. Yeta fell sick, and eventually was possessed by the Mirror’s power. Link freed her, taking the Shard with him as he left. The duo returns to the Sacred Grove, entering the Temple of Time and collecting another Shard.

Upon his return to Kakariko, he discovers that Ilia still has not recovered her memory. With no true lead on the next Shard, Link sets off to recover some way of returning his friend to normal. What little she does remember provides enough clues for Link to retrace her steps to an abandoned village with only one inhabitant. Her name is Impaz, and she is the last of the Sheikah- guardians of Hylian royalty. It was her duty to await the chosen hero so that she could instruct him on how to travel into the sky. She also gives Link something Ilia left behind. A hopeful Link brings the trinket back to Ilia, who recognizes the charm as a device she made that could call Epona, Link’s horse. Ilia’s memory returns, and they are able to talk about recent events for a little while before he needs to leave. Link secures the final Shard from the Oocaa people living up in the sky, and returns to The Arbiter’s Grounds once again.

They use the restored Mirror to travel into the Twilight realm, invading Zant’s palace. They discover that Zant has used his power to take control of the Sols, the only sources of light in the Twilight Realm. This has caused the people to be disfigured, and monsters have been appearing. Link returns the Sols to their original states, and their power is infused with the Master Sword, giving it power to cut through Zant’s darkness itself. Link confronts Zant, who reveals that the power he holds is not his, but Ganondorf’s, who promised him dominion over the Twilight Realm. He also reveals that in his usurpation of the throne, he cursed the true ruler: Midna. The ashamed Twilight Princess explains to Link that she fled the Twilight Realm, abandoning her people because she was ashamed that she had been transformed into such an ugly creature and overthrown. Link defeats Zant with the help of Midna and the Fused Shadows that she uses to attain incredible power. Ganondorf, meanwhile, had only been using Zant as a puppet in order to escape the Twilight Realm. Link and Midna defeat Zant, but they are too late: Ganondorf has made his way into Hyrule.

They make their way to Hyrule Castle, which Ganondorf has blocked off with his power. Midna tears through the barrier using the Fused Shadows, and they storm Hyrule Castle to confront the King of Evil. They receive assistance from the resistance movement, which has been helping them from time to time throughout the journey, and even one of Link’s longtime enemies gives in, claiming that he follows the strongest side. Link fights tooth and nail through a gauntlet of powerful enemies, making his way to the throne room where Ganondorf sits mockingly above Hyrule. Link is shocked to discover that Zelda’s body has been suspended like a trophy high in the center of the room. After a confident monologue from the Gerudo King, he possesses her body and attacks Link. Her fights the possessed Zelda, and Midna uses her power to pull Ganondorf’s spirit from her body and restore her to life. Furious, Ganondorf takes on the form of Ganon, an enormous boar. Link fights him as a wolf with Midna’s help. After they defeat this form, Ganon’s spirit collects as a ball of dark magic, rearing for an attack. Midna bravely warps Link and Zelda to safety in Hyrule Field, taking on the spirit alone.

Helplessly watching from a distance, the distressed pair watches helplessly as the throne room explodes and Ganondorf rides down to Hyrule Field on a conjured horse, carrying the Fused Shadow Midna would wear on her head. He grins triumphantly, snapping the Shadow with ease. A furious Link rears for battle, but Zelda holds him back, knowing that they are sitting ducks as Ganondorf charges at them. Zelda calls upon the Light Spirits to grant her the power to fight Ganondorf. They are temporarily transported out of Ganondorf’s path and into the Sacred Realm, where Zelda receives Arrows and a Bow of Light. She respectfully requests that Link, the Chosen Hero, assists her in this last ditch effort to overthrow the King of Evil. She bows to him out of respect, but Link holds out his hand with a smile. Zelda takes it as the exit the Sacred Realm, appearing back in Hyrule Field on Epona’s back. Together, with Zelda’s Arrows and Link’s Master Sword, they beat Ganondorf off his horse. Still laughing, Ganondorf challenges Link to a duel, one on one. He encloses the two, and they go blade-to-blade in a fight to the death. Link incorporates every little move and trick he’s learned from his journey, coming out victorious thanks to the training he received from the ghost of an ancient, unnamed hero.

The dying Ganondorf manages to squeeze out one last taunting word, the Master Sword still protruding from his chest. The symbol of the Triforce of Power fades from his hand as Link and Zelda stand in silence. Because Ganondorf is dead, Zant is now dead as well. And whatever was done to Midna in the castle, as well as her curse, is lifted. Link notices her some distance away, running towards her with a huge grin on his face. She is just as teasing as she always was.

Link, Zelda, and the fully restored Midna return to The Arbiter’s Grounds, where Midna returns to the Twilight Realm for the last time, completely shattering the Mirror of Twilight as she left before Link or Zelda realized what exactly she was doing.

Link returns the Master Sword to its pedestal, its purpose fulfilled. He returns to Ordon with Epona, but is shown leaving soon afterward. Where to is not certain, however the rebuilt Hyrule Castle is shown, indicating he may have gone there.

Personality

Link is the definition of a “hero.” Despite his relatively young age, battle has matured him into an easy-tempered and reserved yet strong young man. He is patient and caring toward the children of Ordon who look up to him so much. When Ilia irrationally accuses him of hurting his horse, he doesn’t grow angry at her. (even though she’s being quite annoying) He is intelligent, needing to solve many problems and puzzles along his travels. He navigates dungeons and labyrinthine temples, finding secret doors and solving problems with good, old-fashioned intuition.

With that, Link is also a humble and respectful person. This is not to say that he takes lightly his importance as The Chosen Hero. He takes on his duty seriously, but he also keeps a low profile in his travels. He gives money to charity and stops by hurting shops to lend a hand. When the Queen of Hyrule bows down to him, he gives her a smile, holding out his hand instead. He remains friendly and personable, never afraid to approach a stranger, but never coming across as overbearing or bothersome. He’s the kind of guy that holds open the door for someone without even really noticing it or making a big deal of it.

Constant travel and discovery is what Link has grown used to. And because of this, the thrill of the fight and of discovery is something that he has come to look forward to. He is seen leaving Ordon at the end of canon, probably to go off on some other journey- or at least to get out of the tiny village. He is an exceptionally brave young man, but that is not to say that he is without fear. He was terrified when cornered in the ring with Ganondorf. But Link will never back down to something that frightens him. He will face it with dignity and do everything in his power to emerge victorious. With these traits in mind, he is also fiercely protective of his friends, and would willingly give his life for any of their sakes. He is also excellent at thinking on his feet. He keeps a cool head in the heat of the moment, and makes smart decisions mid-battle.
